The sports bar was overflowing with football fans.
Every television was tuned to the World Cup, jerseys filled the room, and chants echoed from every corner. Supporters from different countries had gathered to watch one of the tournament’s biggest matches.
Maria and her friends had arrived early to claim a table near the giant projector screen.
Just behind them sat a lively group of Ecuador supporters dressed head to toe in yellow jerseys, waving flags and confidently predicting a victory over Mexico.
The friendly banter between the two groups started almost immediately.
Whenever Mexico created a chance, Maria would cheer loudly.
Whenever Ecuador attacked, the group behind her erupted in celebration.

During halftime, one of the Ecuador fans joked, “I don’t think Mexico has a chance tonight.”
Maria laughed.
“You sound very confident.”
“We are.”
She smiled mischievously before making a playful challenge.

The group burst into laughter.
“You’ve got a deal!”
“What if Ecuador wins?” one of them asked.
Maria grinned.
“Then I’ll admit you were right.”
The second half began.
To everyone’s surprise, the Ecuador fans who had accepted the challenge suddenly found themselves cheering every Mexico attack.
“Come on, Mexico!” one of them shouted.
His friend looked at him.
“Aren’t you supposed to be supporting Ecuador?”
“I’m supporting the bet!”
The entire section laughed.
Soon the whole group behind Maria had switched sides, celebrating every successful Mexican pass.
Nearby customers couldn’t stop laughing at the strange sight of Ecuador supporters chanting for Mexico.
Even the bartender shook his head.
“I’ve never seen fans change teams so quickly.”
The atmosphere became even more entertaining than the match itself.
With only ten minutes remaining, the score was still level.
Then Mexico launched one final attack.
The striker found space just outside the box.
He curled a beautiful shot into the top corner.

The sports bar exploded.
People jumped from their seats.
Drinks were raised into the air.
The Ecuador supporters behind Maria celebrated louder than anyone else in the room.
One of them shouted, “We believed all along!”
His friends immediately reminded him they had been cheering for Ecuador an hour earlier.
Everyone laughed.
As the final whistle blew, dozens of people turned toward Maria.
“You made a promise!”
She laughed so hard she could barely speak.
Rather than doing anything inappropriate, she stood on her chair, took a dramatic bow, and thanked everyone for making the match unforgettable.
Then she smiled and said, “As for the phone number… that part was obviously just part of the joke.”
The crowd applauded.
Even the Ecuador fans admitted they had been completely fooled by the playful challenge.
Walking out of the bar later that evening, one of them laughed.
“I’ve supported Ecuador my whole life.”
“So why were you cheering for Mexico?”
He smiled.
“For about forty-five minutes… I forgot which team I came to support.”
