I had barely closed the car door before realizing my Uber driver was one of the most confident people I’d ever met.
She greeted me with a smile, confirmed my destination, and pulled away from the curb like she’d been driving the route a thousand times.
For the first few minutes, we made small talk about traffic, the weather, and how busy the city had become.
The conversation flowed naturally.
Every time she laughed, I found myself smiling too.
By the halfway point of the ride, I was thinking the same thing over and over.
“Should I ask for her number?”
Immediately, another thought answered.
“Absolutely not. She’s probably tired of passengers trying that.”
I decided to stay quiet.
Apparently, my nervousness was obvious.
At a red light, she glanced over and laughed.
“You look like you’re trying really hard to ask me something.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Is it that obvious?”
She smiled.
“A little.”
I shook my head.
“I’ve changed my mind about ten times.”
She grinned before joking, “Don’t worry. People get nervous around me all the time.”
I laughed.
“Oh really?”
She nodded dramatically.
“I’ve decided it’s because I’m just too charming.”
Both of us burst into laughter.
The awkwardness disappeared instantly.
The rest of the ride felt like chatting with an old friend.
When we reached my destination, I thanked her for the conversation.
Before getting out, I finally smiled and said, “Would you maybe like to grab a coffee sometime? No pressure at all.”
She smiled warmly.
“I appreciate you asking politely.”
She handed me a small business card.
“If you still feel the same after your trip, you can message me when I’m off work.”
I thanked her, wished her a safe shift, and got out of the car.
As she drove away, I couldn’t stop laughing about her joke.
Sometimes all it takes is one confident sense of humor to turn an awkward moment into a memorable one.
Whether anything came from that coffee invitation or not, it was easily the most entertaining Uber ride I’d ever had.
